PSA Assessment: Design 1

Our PSA is going to compare two people. Since we have two guys in our group, we are going to compare them. One who has an active sex life and another who doesnt have sex at all. Our PSA is going to be like an interview. The active one is going to talk about his experience while the other talks on how he hates his life. Alisa and Marie are going to reporters while Daiki and Peter are going to be interviewed.

PSA Assessment: Investigate

Our topic for the PSA Assessment is “How does sex affect your life positively.” Since I wasn’t in class due to the soccer invitational, i have not participated on choosing this topic. My group members sent me options and reasons for our topic such as “What does sex do to you” or ” How does sex affect your life.” I thought these topics were similar so I voted for “How does sex affect your life positively” since we were able to create a PSA more on a focused topic. Also, we were able to compare our topic with how sex affects your life negatively, which will give our group many options when making our PSA. Since we didn’t know if sex had affects on life, we had some secondary research to do. When we first researched on negatives, most were knowledge most of us we already knew such as, pregnancy and STDs. The only knowledge we learnt was it can cause baldness? because of too much release of male hormones. Since we wanted to create a PSA on a idea that no one in class knew, we focused on the positive benefits of sex. Just like in sex class, many people dont focus on the benefits of sex. Most people think is probably, pleasure, or sex makes your life better. We decided to research and create a PSA on the positive affects sex has not just pleasure but more on, physical and mental benefits. Some sights we ended up on were

http://www.webmd.com/sex-relationships/features/10-surprising-health-benefits-of-sex

http://www.hitsgarden.com/17-reasons-why-having-sex-is-good-for-your-health/

Our group learnt from the site that sex can have many benifits for men such as, stress reliever and reduces chances for having cancer. Through out this research, we decided to make our PSA more on benefits sex has for men.

For our primary research, I sent a survey across freshman and sophmore students. This is because freshman and sophmore students are more shallow on knowledge for sex. We wanted to know what students thought and knew about sex. Questions we had on our survey were

Are there any benefits to having sex? Yes or No.

For people who said yes why?

For people who said no why?

My main role so far in this project was to do the primary research. I sent surveys accross freshman and sophmore students. I was able to gather information from over 30 people. I also participated on deciding the final topic for our group.

Earthquake

The earthquake that shook towards the east of Tokyo caused severe damage in many coast lines in Japan. The epicentre was about 40 km (25 miles) beneath the oceanoff Honshu. Its magnitude was 8.9, which has been the greatest Japan has ever faced. This earthquake has caused a disaster such as tsunamis, explosion of nuclear  power plants, and electricity shortage. Tsunamis hit the coast line of Japan after few hours of the earthquake. Citizens needed to evacuate to high grounds to watch their home get smashed by the waves. Sendai was one of the prefectures that got damaged the most. Sendai airport was flooded with water and people were trapped in the roof tops.

Ads and Counter-Ads: Evaluate

I think this project gave me an good experience in manipulating pictures. Since im not the master of using Gimp or any editing software, my advertisement does not look perfectly beautiful but i think the changes are effective enough to convey the true message. During this project i was able to learn how to use many Gimp tool some of which are, select tool, IWarp, Smudge tool, textbox, and paint brush tool.

In the beginning of this project. I was searching through all sorts of magazine trying to find a perfect ad to manipulate. Though i was not completely sure of what the hidden message was, i chose this ad because by reading the text, i knew that some of the messages were not true. As i started to look more deeply into my ad in the stage “Ads and Counter-Ads: Investigation” I noticed that this advertisement was about getting hot legs with razors. After I was done with my “Ads and Counter-Ads: Investigation” blog post, i was more confident on this advertisement on its undelying message and the message that is shown overboard.

After i finished my Plan blog post and i started manipulating my advertisement, I came across many obstacles. Since i was almost completely new to the gimp software, it took me time to solve everything out. I needed to spend alot of time exploring the tools especially the IWarp. I spent alot of time trying to use the move tool to make the women fatter. Still i wasnt able to make her perfectly fat. I still had bumps in her legs which was impossible to fix at the time. I didnt struggle on putting razor bumps and text. I had done this before from the first time we used gimp for our first blog post. I was able to create razor bumps on the womens legs successfully. Still, i had hard time using the smudge tool to make the razor bumps look natural. But then, i was able to fix some mistakes and i finished creating my final advertisement.

Just like i stated in the above, i had many struggles using the gimp tools. I was able to make the women look fat successfully. I ended up having many bumps and twists in the womens skin. I also struggled on smudging the razor bumps to make them natural. Still, I think i was able to do a fair job in just few hours of gimp experience.

I think this ad was conveying false messages to many of its audience. Since people dont spend alot of time reading advertisements, this ad tried to convey its message mainly using the texts in color. The text at the top, “Its 80degrees in the shade. You’ve got the raft. The towel. And a teeny-weeny bikini. But are you ready?” is really catchy because of the color of text it uses. It also tried to make the product look good using the statement “you’ll have the hottest legs on the beach!” Using the women with the beautiful legs along with the statement, it really impacted its customers. My advertisement shows the true message of the original ad, and reveals the true intentions of ads.

Ads and Counter-Ads: Create 2

This is an picture of an pimple i used in this step.

how-to-cure-pimples-on-face/

After 30minutes of cropping, pasting, iv successfully made it look like the women has razor bumps on her legs.

After another 30minutes of trying out the smudge tool, i smudged out all the text on the bottom right corner. I also smudged out the fading back side of the advertisement which woesnt suppose to be scanned. I also smudged the “But are you ready.” I put in a text box in red that says “This wont get you ready.” This will be my final advertisement,

I didnt complete all the steps in my “plan” blog post but i think i successfully manipulated this advertisement into its true message.

Ads and Counter-Ads: Create 1

I have been testing out the IWarp on gimp for an hour or so now and my current ad is like this;

I have finished most of my first step in manipulating this ad. Still, I have many parts to fix. The womens upper body still looks thin compared to the legs so i will need to move it outwards more. I also need to fix some parts in the leg to make it look more smooth (ankle). After im done with fixing the ad, i will proceed to the process of putting razor bumps on her legs.

Ads and Counter-Ads: Plan

The first step in manipulating this image will be to make the women look fatter. I will go to filter -> IWarp inorder to make the women look fatter. By moving her skin outwards, it will stretch the image making her look fat. This will take away the image of hot legs from this ad.

The next step will to create razor bumps on her legs. I will find a picture of a pimple online and crop the pimple out using the free select tool. I will paste it on the women’s legs and smudge so it looks like a razor bump. This will take away the image of shaving gel will give you safe shave.

The next step will be to make the razors white. I will simply use the paint tool to color the razors. This will take the image of “ultra cool colorful razor”, as the ad says.

For the final step, I will change the “But are you ready?” to “This wont get you ready.” I will use the crop took take away the “But are you ready?”, then I will use a text box to put “This wont get you ready” on the ad.

By manipulating this image with the four steps above, it will change this advertisement into its real image.

Ads and Counter-Ads: Design

There are many ways on manipulating this ad to show the audience the “true” message.

For example, i can:

– Make the girl’s leg fatter to show that razors wont give you the “hottest legs on the beach.”

– Put razor bumps on the girls legs to show that shaving isnt always safe

– Make all the razors white and take away the text, “With one of six ultra cool, colorful razors in your style file, you’ll have the hottest legs on the beach!”

– Change “But are you ready” to “This wont get you ready”.

– Apply all of the above

By manipulating this image with the five points above, it will change this advertisement into its real image. By making the women’s body fat, it will take away how they are saying colorful razors can get you the “hottest legs on the beach.” By putting razor bumps on the womens legs, it will show that shaving with shave gel doesnt mean 100% safe.

Ads and Counter-Ads: Investigate

Gillette for Women. Are you ready? [Photograph]. (2010, November). Seventeen, 141.

This advertisement that I got from the magazine “Seventeen” is an ad targeted to women. This is an ad for an razor that gives you the “hottest legs on the beach”.

Advertisement includes,

Picture: A women with nice legs tanning/lying on a raft. Next to that, five colorful Gillette razors and Gillette Saitin Care.

Text: Its 80degrees in the shade. You’ve got the raft. The towel. And a teeny-weeny bikini. But are you ready?

Get into the craze this season with Gillette Sensor for Women razors. With one of six ultra cool, colorful razors in your style file, you’ll have the hottest legs on the beach! Along with Gillette Satin Care Shave Gel, they’ll give you a safe shave for smooth skin. And who’s not ready to get a little color this summer?

This ad is trying to persuading their customers buy selling colorful razors for women. The ad also uses colorful text to bolster the image of colorful razors. In the right down corner of the ad, it says”With one of six ultra cool, colorful razors in your style file, you’ll have the hottest legs on the beach!” This is not true because using colorful razors will not give you the hottest legs on the beach. Further more, razors wouldn’t give you the hottest legs. By showing a model with nice, slim, and long legs, the ad is trying to convey the message, by using these colorful razors, you will have beautiful legs.

In the bottom right corner, it says that “Along with Gillette Satin Care Shave Gel, they’ll give you  safe shave for smooth skin.” Shaving safe differs on the way the person shaves, shave gel may reduce the chances of getting cuts or razor bumps but it is not 100%.

This advertisement is trying to convince girls to buy this product by conveying false messages.
